31 Days of Halloween – Day 1

Halloween always has been, and always will be my very favorite holiday. Growing up in the mid-west certainly helped sparked the magic and imagination of the season. With the smell of crisp burning leaves, apple orchards, and woodsy chilly nights in the air, it’s the time of year I feel most alive.

My Mom would always make this time of year extra special for my brother, sister and I. We would help decorate the house with fun whimsical Halloweeny things… Glowing grins from jack-o-lanterns, old fashioned ghosts holding pumpkins that would light up the spookiest of nights, and iconic witches on their broom sticks with their black cats in tow, gliding past a full harvest moon… Visits to pumpkin patches to pick the pumpkin that we deemed best for carving our jack-o-lanterns… Hoping to catch a glimpse of a witch by the full moon’s light… And on Halloween night my Mom would always make a big pot of the yummiest chili to warm our bellies before going trick-or-treating with the other ghouls and goblins. Our Halloween was always a whimsical, vintage style Halloween. We were never into the scary gory version of the holiday. While there’s nothing wrong with that, it just wasn’t the way we celebrated. And the wonderful thing is thyat through the years all of us have the exact same love of the holiday. We’ll usually start calling each other excitedly starting in August saying, “guess what’ll be here soon?!? Halloween!!!”.

Family Halloween

So with that, I would like to present to you… the 31 Days of Halloween!! I shall call it Hallowtober and it will be my tribute to Halloween and October. I like to celebrate the holiday and the season each day this month because celebrating just one day on Halloween is just simply NOT enough! My posts during this time will be all about the fun things, from small to big, that you can do to make the most of this glorious time of year.

Without further ado… I want to get you into the spirit of things with one of my favorite animated Disney shorts from 1929… Silly Symphony: The Skeleton Dance. This is pretty impressive given back then they did all of the animation by hand. Seriously spooky… and awesome!

xoxo,
Jen
